Mother's Day - what your Mum REALLY wants

Published: Monday 28 April 2025

Mothers Day What Mum Really Wants, farm-fresh from Olivieri Flowers on the Central Coast.

It happens every year. One minute it’s Easter, the next you’re in the middle of May wondering if a supermarket box of chocolates and a generic card is going to cut it.

You open your browser, type in "Mother’s Day gifts near me", and start scrolling through suggestions you’re not even sure she’ll like.

If this is you, we get it!  Finding the right thing for Mum (or Nan, or your partner’s mum, or someone who’s been like a mum to you) can feel overwhelming. But here’s the truth: it doesn’t need to be complicated.

Because what most mums really want on Mother’s Day isn’t “stuff.”

It’s not about the price tag (or how long it lasts)

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need to find the most impressive or expensive gift. But for most mums, the thing they want more than anything is to feel appreciated. To know that you thought about them. That you noticed all the little things they do that often go unacknowledged.

For some, that might look like a long lunch or breakfast in bed. For others, it might be a hug and a hot cuppa (no interruptions, no schedule. It’s not about extravagance) it’s about intention.

And honestly? Most mums don’t need more things.

More things to dust. More things to store. More things to quietly pass on when they realise the gift wasn’t quite right. It’s not about adding clutter to her life, it’s about adding meaning to her day.

Why flowers hit differently

That’s why flowers are such a powerful gesture. They don’t ask for anything in return. They don’t take up space forever. And they don’t need to be used, charged, cleaned, or tidied away.

They exist simply to be enjoyed in the moment.

This week on social media, we saw a beautiful moment from The Drew Barrymore Show that’s been sticking with us. Drew and Ross were asking a florist how to make flowers last longer, and instead of giving them a tip or trick, he took their hands and said:

“Listen to me. Flowers are not meant to last. They are here to teach us to be in the moment and be present.”

And honestly? We couldn’t agree more.

Flowers are fleeting, but that’s what makes them special. They’re a reminder to pause, to notice the beauty, and to appreciate something just because it’s here right now.

A moment, not a thing

A bunch of fresh flowers is a lot like a long lunch, a shared coffee, or a handwritten note. It’s a moment to savour. Not something to add to a shelf or a cupboard or a to-do list.

So if you’ve ever thought, “But flowers don’t last”, that’s the point. They’re not meant to. They’re there to be enjoyed now, not managed forever.

Choosing something that feels like her

At Olivieri’s, we love helping people choose flowers that feel like the person they’re for. Maybe your mum is all about soft pastels and delicate roses. Maybe she’s got a thing for bold natives and a bit of drama. Or maybe you just want something seasonal, fresh, and beautifully made, no decisions required.

We’re here for all of that. And we can help you add a handwritten card or pick something that suits the vase she already loves using. It doesn’t need to be over-the-top, it just needs to feel thoughtful.

Flowers don’t need to last forever. They just need to mean something in the moment.

Planning ahead (without the stress)

Mother’s Day is one of the biggest weeks of the year for florists, and while we love the chaos, we also love it when our customers get in early and avoid the last-minute rush.

We’ve already got a beautiful range of Mother’s Day flowers available to pre-order on our website. You can choose delivery or in-store pick-up, and if you’re not sure what to pick, you’re always welcome to call or pop in and have a chat with our team.

If you’re someone who usually leaves it to Saturday afternoon, this is your sign to plan ahead. Your future self will thank you.

Still not sure?

If you’re still debating whether flowers are the right call, here’s a little perspective:

Most mums aren’t wishing for another novelty item that ends up collecting dust. What they really want is to feel seen, loved, and appreciated. A thoughtfully chosen gift - a beautiful bunch of flowers, a favourite candle, or a heartfelt card - feels like a moment of care.

It’s not about the thing itself. It’s about the feeling behind it.

A surprise bunch of flowers, especially ones they didn’t have to choose themselves, feels like a moment of joy.

Whether they’re juggling toddlers, managing full calendars, or being the quiet glue that holds everything together, these small gestures say "Thank you!", and "I see you.", and "You matter to me".

In the end ...

...you don’t need to overthink it.

A beautiful bunch of flowers. A handwritten note. A phone call or a quiet cuppa together. That’s more than enough.

This Mother’s Day, give her something that’s simple, thoughtful, and full of meaning.

Something fresh.

Something beautiful.

Something that says "I love you", without needing a single word.
