Flower Spotlight - Gerberas - Colour, Care, Quality, farm-fresh from Olivieri Flowers on the Central Coast.

Gerberas are flowers that can brighten any room right away.

With their big, bright blooms and cheerful colours, they bring a bit of sunshine inside no matter the season. At Olivieri's, we love these happy flowers not only for how beautiful they look but also because they come fresh from our local farm.

What Makes Gerberas So Special?

Gerberas, or gerbera jamesonii, are part of the daisy family. They are easy to spot because of their large, round flower heads made up of hundreds of tiny petals. They come in lots of colours like red, orange, yellow, pink, and white. This means they fit perfectly in any bouquet or flower arrangement.

At Olivieri's, we don't just grow the regular gerberas. We also have special types like mini gerberas, pom-pom gerberas, and spider gerberas. Each one adds a fun twist to the usual flower. Sometimes, you can even buy gerbera plants from our shop to grow your own happy flowers at home.

Growing Gerberas on the Central Coast Farm

Our gerberas grow well here on the Central Coast because we take good care of them. We grow them under big tents that protect the plants from harsh sun or heavy rain but still let in fresh air and soft sunlight.

Each plant grows in its own pot, lined up neatly in rows. This helps us control how much water and air the soil gets, which keeps the plants healthy. We make sure the crown—the place where the leaves meet the roots—sits just above the soil to stop it from rotting.

We water the plants carefully, keeping the soil moist but never too wet. We also feed them regularly with nutrients to help the flowers grow strong and colourful. We pick the flowers by hand three times a week to make sure only the freshest blooms go to our customers.

When a plant finishes blooming, we take it out and plant a new one. This way, our farm stays full of beautiful flowers all year long. It's a lot of work, but it means you get the best gerberas grown with real care; a little bit of local sunshine just for you.

How We Use Gerberas in Floristry

In flower arranging gerberas are called “focal flowers” because they catch your eye first. They are the main stars of many bouquets. Since their big heads can sometimes droop over time, we add wires to their stems to keep them upright and looking fresh longer.

You'll find gerberas in some of our favourite arrangements like Our Farms Best. Their strong stems and bright colours work well with soft filler flowers and green leaves to create fresh and balanced arrangements.

If you really love gerberas check out our Happy Days bouquet. It's full of these joyful blooms and fresh greenery, available in bright or soft colours.

Gerberas are available by the bunch in our shop, with each bunch containing 10 stems. They're sold without gift wrap or greenery for great value, though you can choose to add greenery and gift wrap if you like.

Gerberas hold up well in fresh water and floral foam, so they look great both in vases and in arrangements like Absolutely Olivieri's.

How to Care for Your Gerberas at Home

Here are some simple tips to help your gerberas stay fresh:

  • Trim about 1 to 2 centimetres off the stems at an angle before putting them in clean water. This helps them take up water better.
  • Don't fill the vase too high. Gerberas like only 2 to 5 centimetres of water to avoid their stems rotting.
  • Change the water every two days to keep it clean and stop bacteria.
  • Keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and ripening fruit because fruit gives off gases that make flowers wilt faster.
  • Remove any wilting leaves or petals so the other flowers stay healthy longer.

With these easy steps your gerberas can stay bright and happy for more than a week.

Why Choose Local, Farm-Grown Flowers?

Buying local flowers means you get fresher blooms. Imported flowers spend a long time travelling, but our gerberas come quickly from the farm to your home, still full of life.

Buying local also helps the environment by cutting down on long-distance shipping. It supports farmers and communities here on the Central Coast who care a lot about growing healthy flowers.

When you choose Olivieri's gerberas you're getting quality flowers and helping the people who grow them with care.
