Local Blooms We Love

Fresh Local Flowers, farm-fresh from Olivieri Flowers.

We’re so excited to share some of the amazing local flowers we’re working with right now at Olivieri’s Florist.

We love lisianthus, hydrangea, and dahlia, all grown in the lush hills of Peat’s Ridge (or "the mountain," as we like to call it).  These flowers thrive in rich, fertile soil and make all our arrangements look amazing. Here’s why we’re obsessed with them and how we use them in our designs!

Fresh, Local Flowers

Buying local means fresher flowers that last longer, and supports the awesome farmers in our community. The flowers from Peat’s Ridge are top-quality, and we’re lucky to work with farmers who care about growing them. So, when you get an arrangement from us featuring these blooms, you know it’s fresh and has been grown with a lot of love!

Lisianthus

Lisianthus is one of those flowers that steals the show. It has these soft, ruffled petals that look a lot like roses. It comes in loads of colours, from soft pinks and purples to yellow, green, and even mixed colours. This flower blooms in spring and summer (from October to March), and it’s a favourite for weddings because it’s romantic and holds up well in bouquets and centrepieces.

Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are super dramatic and always make an impact. They have huge, full blooms and come in colours like pink, white, blue, purple, and even red. These flowers grow in late spring to early summer, and they’re thirsty little things so we make sure to keep them hydrated by misting them regularly!  What’s cool about hydrangeas is that their colour can change depending on the soil they’re grown in. Acidic soil makes them blue, while alkaline soil makes them pink or red, so it’s fun for us to mix them in different arrangements to match any vibe.

Dahlia

Dahlias are another flower that comes in all sorts of colours, like deep reds, oranges, pinks, purples, and whites. They bloom from late spring to early autumn and their petals are a unique shape making them perfect for centrepieces or as a bold statement in bouquets. Dahlias grow from tubers so each season’s blooms can be a little different depending on how the tubers were cared for. We love how their shapes and sizes—from giant, dinner-plate-sized flowers to cute, small pom-pom ones—add so much character to any arrangement.

Bringing the Season to Life in Our Designs

At Olivieri’s Florist, we always design with intention. Here’s how we make sure our flowers match the season and vibe:

Colour Harmony:

Great floral design starts with colour. Colour harmony is all about combining shades in a way that feels balanced, polished, and easy on the eyes. It helps set the mood and brings a bouquet to life. Here are a few ways we create that perfect blend:

  • Analogous Colours: These sit next to each other on the colour wheel — like blue, blue-green, and green. They create a soft, calming flow and feel beautifully cohesive.
  • Complementary Colours: Opposites attract! Think red and green or purple and yellow. These pairings create a striking contrast and make each colour pop.
  • Triadic Colours: This involves three colours evenly spaced on the colour wheel, like red, blue, and yellow. It’s a vibrant, balanced mix that feels playful without being overpowering.
  • Monochromatic Colours: Different shades of the same colour bring a sense of elegance and calm. It’s a simple, sophisticated way to create depth without too much contrast.

We love using colour to set the vibe of our designs. Soft pink lisianthus with bold purple dahlias brings romance, while bright coral and lemon dahlias give off a fresh, summery energy. It’s all about creating the right feeling — one bouquet at a time.

Texture & Form:

Mixing textures is key to creating interest. We combine big, sculptural hydrangeas with the soft, delicate petals of lisianthus, or we mix the bold shapes of dahlias with more fragile flowers for a balanced, dynamic look.

En Masse:

Sometimes, less really is more. Using one type of flower en masse — like a big, lush bunch of hydrangeas or a full arrangement of dahlias — creates a striking, modern look. This style lets the natural beauty and texture of the flower shine without distraction, making a bold statement. It’s also a great way to create visual impact, whether it’s a dramatic centrepiece or a simple, elegant bouquet. Plus, when you stick to one bloom, the colours and shapes feel cohesive and calming — perfect for a timeless, polished vibe.

Celebrating the Season:

We choose flowers that are in season, so our arrangements always highlight nature at its best. Hydrangeas look amazing in large clusters, while lisianthus adds a soft touch to any bouquet. Every flower gets its moment to shine when it’s in season.
